![]() Much of the state is formed by the Shan Plateau. Shan State is largely rural with only three populated cities of significant size which are Lashio, Kengtung and Taunggyi. Due to its large size, it is often referred to as three similarly sized regions –as Shan (North), Shan (South) and Shan (East) before 2012 according to the official Gazatteer from General Administration Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs. ![]() It is largest of the 14 administrative divisions in Myanmar, covering 155, 458 km 2, almost a quarter of the total country area.
